Becky Svatos’ impact on our community continues with the establishment of the Svatos Engineering Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation. Becky is a long-time resident of the Iowa City Area, having grown up here and attended the University of Iowa’s Engineering Program for her undergraduate degree. Becky went on to earn her Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Texas. After spending some time building her career in Florida and North Carolina, Becky returned to the area in the late 1990s. Becky is a distinguished environmental engineer, whose career, largely at Stanley Consultants, was based in her passion for making the world better. She is a Senior Life Member of the Society of Women Engineers and a Charter Member of the Engineers Without Borders Iowa Chapter. Throughout her career, Becky supported youth education and volunteered in a variety of ways in her community. Becky’s professional career concluded with her retirement in 2022.
To celebrate the incredible legacy of Becky’s work, her family worked with the Community Foundation of Johnson County staff to determine the best way to celebrate their matriarch. The family established the Svatos Engineering Endowed Scholarship Fund to honor Becky’s career by helping future generations of engineers. “I’ve always tried to encourage young people to go into engineering – especially girls because they are underrepresented still in engineering by quite a bit…” Becky states. The Svatos Engineering Endowed Scholarship will support women, minorities, and under-represented groups in engineering to begin their studies in the field of engineering at both community college and university programs.
