John E Langhorne Leadership Grants

Purpose

The John E Langhorne Leadership Development Grants were created to celebrate and continue Dr. Langhorne’s legacy of cultivating leadership skills in the Iowa City Area. These grants will support charitable programs and projects which offer leadership development to individuals of all ages. Dr. Langhorne believed that every person’s leadership style is unique and ever-changing, and these grants will support a variety of programs which enhance leadership development for individuals.

Grants will be a maximum of $5,000. 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations, the Iowa City Community School District, and municipalities within and significantly serving Johnson County, Iowa are eligible to apply. Examples of Preferred Requests/Areas of Funding

  • Specific leadership development focus
  • Board Retreats with leadership focus
  • Leadership Conference Attendance (one or more staff members/board members)
  • Executive Director/Team Coaching
  • Leadership Certificate Programs
Eligibility Requirements
  • 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization, Municipality, and/or the Iowa City Community School District
  • Located in or significantly serving Johnson County, IA

 

Ineligible for Funding
  • Deficit funding or debt retirement
  • Direct financial support to individuals
  • Political or lobbying activities
  • Projects that are not for a charitable purpose
  • Projects or events that have already been completed
  • Religious or sectarian activities that attempt to convert a person to a particular faith or perspective, or social service activities that require participation in such
  • Organizations or activities which do not comply with our nondiscrimination and diversity policy

Grant Process and Timeline

Applications are submitted via our online grant system.

The application period opens on January 1, 2026 and closes at 11:59 pm on January 31, 2026.  All applications will be reviewed by the Grants Committee and applicants will be notified of the decision in late March.

Grant awardees will be required to submit a follow-up report on the use of funds by June 30, 2027. Reporting is also completed through the online grant system and consists of a short written report.

Preparing to Submit a Grant Application

All grant applications must be submitted through our online grants portal. If you are using this system for the first time, you will be asked to create a username (your email address), password and an organizational profile. Before you open a new account, we recommend collecting the following information about your organization:

  • Organization Name
  • Organization Tax ID Number (Employer Identification Number)
  • Complete Organization Contact Information
  • Complete Organization CEO/Executive Director Contact Information
